On Tuesday Feurary 16, 2010, our city will have a primary election.
As I have noted in the past, these elections usually have a sparse turnout. There are many reasons that residents don't bother to vote in these elections. Some say they have to work, some use bad weather as an excuse. There are parents that say they have no one to watch the kids and its too hard to vote. Some people don't believe their vote will make a difference and still others are just too lazy to bother.
I understand all of the reasoning behind the excuses, but but I suggest that you take a second to think about the choice that you make if you don't bother to vote that day.
Get in your car, get on your bike, or just go and take a walk around our city before the primary. Open your eyes, and hearts, and really take a look at our city. Drive, bike or walk around not just Packard Avenue, but the side streets as well. Look at the empty homes, the for sale and for rent signs in the store front windows. Look at the businesses that are still here. Take a good long look at the number of taverns and empty lots in our community.
If you like what you see, if the "progress" that we have made is enough for you, by all means don't bother to go to the polls on Tuesday February 16th. 2010.
But if your not happy with what you see, if you don't think that another new tavern in the city is progress, or if your tired of the same old song, then get out and vote on Tuesday February 16th, 2010.
As a friend of mine once told me, and I'll pass this thought along to you, " If you
don't excersize your right to vote today, you don't have the right to complain tommorrow"
