First please review Kevin Fech's blog on the parks. It is important for all of us to think about parks and I thank Mr. Fech for his interest. The comments that follow speak for themselves, but I do take exception to the suggestion that I have not been interested in the parks. It amazes me that annonymous bloggers can blow smoke and subsequent anonymous contributors treat the smoke as factual.
Let me provide some updates:
In working hard last year during budget, I acquired money to finally fix the electrical problems in Sheridan Park, this work should begin by May. It will also finally fix the ditches and holes that were created last year in searching for the problem.
While the County Executive has called for pool closures, I worked hard to keep Sheridan Pool open as well as the wading pool at Pulaski. If this is a hot summer, all of our children will have these pools to enjoy especially since families are having a hard time with their own finances. These pools provide an attractive and affordable alternative to expensive vacations.
I succeeded in getting a dog park for Warnimont which should also be built in Spring. After visiting with Kelley Seniors and exploring their thoughts and next, checking with the elected officials on their interest, I succeeded in getting the money that had been earmarked for a Bayview Dog Park when this community could not find a suitable sight. The Police Chief thanked me for my efforts since it will help to move out the element that has plagued Warnimont for decades.
I reinvigorated the Sheridan Friends group. Sylvia Gear and Antoinette Vnuk have courageously agreed to be co-Presidents, and Mrs. Gear has held meetings at her house all winter. I wish some of the blow-hard bloggers would spend their efforts joining these groups. There will be a litter pick-up on Arbor Day (4/24) in Sheridan Park. I will be there; I hope our bloggers will come and put their efforts into something constructive.
The Sheridan Friends will also have a weed-out to rid invasive species; please watch for future notices. Sheridan Friends also sponsored the first ever Concert in the Park last year and are working to obtain one for this summer. Pedal in the Park with Pat will hold its fourth annual bike ride to highlight our great bike trial.
Anyone who knows why I ran for office, knows it was because I was angry that Sheridan Pavillion was boarded up like some slum property. Before going to bed at night, I personally go across the street and pick up litter and check the lake bank. I often call the Sheriff's Targeted Enforcement Unit when drug activity is apparent. I have my husband driving through the parks to keep and eye on them as well.
But yes, the parks are becoming frayed. Every year we spend less money on caring for them. If anyone suggests raising taxes, the same bloggers that criticize the condition of the parks squeal like fattened pigs over the taxes. Unless we are all willing to get out and take care of our parks, the actions of a few may well be futile in saving our beloved jewels.
