MORE Robotics’ Lego Teams Qualify for State

On November 14, 2009 two FIRST Lego League teams from the Thomas More Community Robotics Club competed at the St. Thomas More Regional. FIRST, which stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, hosts robotics competitions to get young people interested in the study of science and technology. Students aged 9-14 build and program autonomous robots using Lego Mindstorms components to compete in a game challenge. Teams are judged in several areas including robot performance, technical knowledge, a research project, teamwork, and gracious professionalism. This year’s challenge was called Smart Move. The teams explored transportation issues in their community and proposed solutions for improvement.

Rockwell Automation’s Fighting Llama Legion won the Champion’s Award, the most prestigious award given to the team that is the total package, who achieves high scores in several judging areas and that best exemplifies the values of FIRST Lego League. Discovery World’s From the Wilds won the Team Spirit Award and finished 4th overall.

Both teams qualified to compete at the State Championship in Osseo, WI on December 5, 2009. The teams were made up of students from 12 different schools and were mentored by parents and students from FRC Team #1714. They were sponsored by Rockwell Automation, Discovery World, American Acrylics USA LLC, and More Robotics Team #1714.
