A Call for Cooperation to Keep Sheridan Park Clean this 4th of July
Residents and visitors are being asked to help keep Sheridan Park clean during Cudahy’s annual 4th of July celebration.
Department of Public Works (DPW) employees and 4th of July volunteers will be out collecting garbage and emptying trash cans throughout the day and long after the fireworks are over. But officials hope people enjoying the holiday in the park will do their part to help.
“Please take a minute to pack trash bags in your picnic basket,” said Mayor Ryan McCue. “If you bag your own garbage we will provide the pick-up service. We will also have trash bags available in Sheridan Park if you need them.”
DPW workers will be using pickup trucks and garbage carts to drive around the grounds and collect garbage. They will also be placing dumpsters and cardboard receptacles throughout the park to accommodate the estimated 15,000 people expected for the festivities and fireworks.
In years past, Milwaukee County workers helped clean up Sheridan Park during and after the celebration. But according to Mayor McCue, help will not be available this year because of county budget cuts.
“We’re disappointed that we won’t have the county’s assistance this year, but we know we can count on Cudahy residents and visitors to keep our park clean,” McCue said. “In tough times it’s important that we all work together.”
People do not need to bring grills and coolers to Sheridan Park. The Cudahy Lion’s Club will be selling brats, hot dogs and corn-on-the-cob. Popcorn, beer, wine coolers and soda also will be available for purchase.
Cudahy’s 4th of July celebration entitled “Spirit of America” kicks off at noon with one of the area’s longest parades. It begins at the intersection of Packard and Grange, marches north down Packard to Layton then heads east on Layton to Lake Drive.
After the parade, people can enjoy music and activities throughout the day in Sheridan Park including dance teams, musical acts, clown and magic shows and children’s games.
The celebration concludes with Cudahy’s grand fireworks display at 9:20 p.m.
