3rd Grader Wins 'Spirit of America' Essay Contest
It was a grand end to the school year for a third grade student and his classmates at General Mitchell Elementary School.
Alex Chariton won the essay contest that coincides with Cudahy’s annual 4th of July celebration. As a reward, Mayor Ryan McCue treated Alex and his classmates to a pizza party.
“Alex’s composition shows that he clearly understands what Independence Day is all about,” Mayor McCue said. “Congratulations to him and the other students who submitted heartfelt entries.”
Children were asked to express what the Spirit of America means to them. “Spirit of America” is the theme of Cudahy’s 4th of July celebration this year.
Alex wrote:
“Spirit of America means joy to me. I have joy when I am with my family and celebrating the Fourth of July. I also think Spirit of American means freedom to do what you want. You can choose the job you want or where you want to live. It means peace, too. When soldiers fight for our country to keep us safe, I feel proud. The American flag is a symbol of America. It shows our loyalty. We celebrate the Fourth of July and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This symbolizes our freedom. This is what the Spirit of America means to me.”
