(Zoological Society of Milwaukee, Oct. 2012)—Spiderman and a pirate: Chase Hodgins, 3, of Cudahy, meets pirate Captain Bella at the Milwaukee County Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo on Oct. 19. Captain Bella was part of Captain Jack Sparrow’s pirate crew, who greeted zoogoers in the Zoo’s entrance atrium. Sendik’s Food Markets sponsored the evening event, held both Oct. 19 and 20. Attendees could enjoy a Halloween haystack maze, a dancing light show in the Zoo’s Wolf Woods, or a spooky train ride. Despite the drizzle, which seemed to add to the Halloween atmosphere, more than 9,470 zoogoers came to the Zoo over both nights.

(Zoological Society of Milwaukee, September 2012)—Cudahy siblings Jillian, 2, and Ronald Decker, 3, pet a guinea pig at the Milwaukee County Zoo on Sept. 8. The two were attending the Zoo’s Family Farm Weekend, sponsored by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. The weekend included ice cream making, a farmer’s market, and a tractor pull for children sponsored by CNH. The Bluegrass Allstars lent country charm with live bluegrass tunes in the Zoo’s farmyard. On Sunday, Alice in Dairyland made an appearance to teach zoogoers about Wisconsin’s farming industry. The harvest festivities drew more than 12,600 people to the Zoo during the two-day event.

Cousins Battle In 2012 WFCA All Star Football Game
Cousins Jeffrey Hauenstein (left) of Cudahy High School and Austin Littmann (right) of Marshfield High School will be battling it out Saturday, July 14th at UW-Oshkosh Titan Stadium at 5:00 PM. The game is the 2012 WFCA All Star Football game with the high schools of Northern Wisconsin facing the schools from Southern Wisconsin.
Jeffrey is a defensive back and Austin is a wide receiver, so the chances are good that the two cousins will face each other on the field. Each was nominated by their coaches and then selected to play in the WFCA All Star Game which is also a charity event to help raise money for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

Pioneer drilling in Drum Corps' spring training. The Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps of Milwaukee is busy preparing for its 50th season of competition. The corps, which formed in 1972 after the Imperials of St. Patrick's and the Thunderbolt of Cedarburg merged and formed a new unit. Through the years, the Pioneer has competed against the best Drum Corps throughout the United States. Milwaukee native Roman Blenski is in his 50th season as corps director. A 50th anniversary reunion is planned for July 15-16 at PioneerLand, the corps' practice site. Pioneer alumni and fans can get more information by visiting www.Pioneer-Alumni.org.

For his continued dedication to conservation efforts at the Milwaukee County Zoo, throughout Wisconsin and around the world, Craig Berg received the Pan paniscus (bonobo) award May 20, 2011, from the Zoological Society of Milwaukee (ZSM). The award is a framed print of a bonobo (ape) hand. Berg, who lives in Cudahy, was honored at the ZSM’s Serengeti Circle Luncheon at the Zoo. As the Zoo’s aquarium and reptiles curator since 1996, he not only has launched several conservation initiatives for Wisconsin species like the ornate box turtle and massasauga rattlesnake, but he also serves as manager for the Zoo’s iguana conservation program. Berg also visits Caribbean countries yearly to help study and conserve frogs, snakes and marine reefs. The Serengeti Circle is a group of corporations and foundations that contributes grants and sponsorships to both the Zoo and ZSM. The luncheon recognizes them and their generous support. The construction in rooms 124, 125, and 127 at Cudahy High School is coming along nicely. Once the insulation is in and the wiring is laid, the rooms will be carpeted and the presentation equipment will be installed.
