Sixth Grade Students Help Make Park View Christmas Concert a Success

Park View

At Park View school, we'd like to thank the sixth grade students with their help in organizing and planning the Christmas concert this year. The students assumed many of the responsibilities necessary to make the performance run smoothly.

They contacted members of the community with special invitations.  They learned instrument parts, escorted the students on stage, hosted the concert, and designed the program.   This experience not only helped the students understand the work involved in producing a concert, it also provided them with the responsibility and ownership skills to make this event their own.

We are all proud of their hard work and assistance!

Bridge Building at General Mitchell School

Bridge Building, General Mitchell

The sixth grade students at General Mitchell school recently did a bridge builing project. Working in groups of five, student contractors operate simulated architectural firms to create strong, economical bridges and account for construction costs.  Applying their knowledge of math, science, and language are key components for a successful project.  Students learn to write checks, balance accounts, maintain a task schedule, use analytical writing, apply the laws of stress, tension and compression, and work with others to accomplish a common goal.  This exposes the students to a wide variety of career options in the process!

Day 1:  Students helped to select their companies (groups).  The task was explained as well as the city's building codes, rules, and violation system.  Job roles were selected within the company based on each students strengths.  The architects began to sketch their bridge design while the remainder of the group prepared their land with the use of measurement.

Day 2:  BRIDGE BUILDING BEGINS!  Companies were able to purchase material from the warehouse today.  This was the first step in the construction process.  They continued to work on building throughout the day.  The bridges are coming along wonderfully!

Day 3: Bridge building continues. The students are working hard to complete their bridges for tomorrows bridge breaking ceremony.  The structures are looking good and the companies are working hard to problem solve in order to create the strongest and most beautiful bridge they can.

Day 4:  THE BRIDGE BREAKING CEREMONY!  Bridges were completed in the morning so that in the afternoon, students were able to determine how much weight their bridges could withstand.  Awards were provided for the most attractive bridge, the strongest bridge, best architect, carpenter, project manager, and transportation chief.  Congratulations sixth grade!
