At the Cudahy Elementary Schools, the kindergarten students just met their reading buddies.
Reading buddies is a program throughout the school district that benefits and excites both age groups! The younger children, either 4-year old kindergarten or 5-year old kindergarten, love the one-on-one attention they receive from their buddy. They are also excited to become friends with a "big kid" and friendships form very quickly.
The older students, ranging from second to sixth grade, learn to be leaders and teachers as they reinforce their skills by helping the younger children. This fosters responsibility, understanding, and patience on the part of the older students.
Each week, the two groups:
- Work on activities or project that relate to the themes taught in the classroom.
- Read stories while learning book handling skills and parts of a book.
- Use imagination to extend or write stories.
- Play games to enhance knowledge.
In other words, this wonderful program provides fun ways to learn through the use of cooperation and friendship!
