On Sunday, May 15th, 2011, I ran in the 7th annual Block Melanoma 5k at the Milwaukee County Zoo. http://blockmelanoma.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=451613 The event raised more than $88,000 for the Anne's Hope foundation with the funds being used for Melanoma research. Anne's Hope foundation has given over $700,000 in research grants over the past seven years! Melanoma is the most serious of the three main types of skin cancer (Carcinoma, Sarcoma and the most serious: Melanoma).
Some of you may know that I have had three surgeries for Basal Cell Carcinoma which is one of the three types of skin cancer. (Basal Cell Carcinoma is not as serious as Melanoma and normally does not spread to other organs.) I am a former lifeguard and sun worshipper which without question led to my occurrences of this disease. In my case, the cancer was easily removed with a simple outpatient surgery each time. It didn't require radiation or chemo. I am so thankful I did not have the more serious type (Melanoma).
On Saturday, my son Chris and I ran in the Run/Walk for Project Concern in Sheridan Park. The event raised $1,800 ! Congratulations to the Cudahy High School students who planned, organized and hosted this run and walk. What a great class project! The students organized this event as part of their environmental science class.
I saw lots of people I knew and it was a perfect day for running. The course was a simplified version of the Cudahy cross-country course. The runners completed two loops of the course for a 5k run. Walkers followed the runners and followed the same course.
