4D Movies
Going to the movies with my kids is such a luxury.
The lights go out. The movie starts. Sometimes my youngest son lets me put my arms around him. And then I go to SLEEP. When I go to the movies with my kids, I get at least an hour nap and, as long as they don't notice, it's wonderful.
(I normally put one hand conveniently next to my eyes, which always guarantees my secret.)
The only time this plan backfired was when we were at Wisconsin Dells and decided to see the Noah Ark's Spongebob 4D movie.
(I did NOT know what 4D meant.)
At Noah's Ark, we walked into the theater. We took dark glasses for the movie (very cool - no need to cover my eyes) and we sat down. The lights went out and after a long day of walking, I was so ready for a nap. The movie started. My eyes closed.
Suddenly, my chair moved. I heard my kids laugh and I became startled. My chair then started to shake to the action in the movie!
OK.
The chairs in front of me then sprayed me with every reference to water. This was, as you can imagine, a lot since the plot is about a sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea. Small fans whirled beneath my seat, blowing air on my ankles with every reference to creepy sea animals. I heard both my kids and my husband howl with laughter.
OK.
I was both amused at the sudden revelation of what a 4D movie was and annoyed that I was AWAKE. For the rest of the movie, I gave up all hope for a nap, clung to my chair, and laughed with my family.

Totlol - Music Videos for Children
Here's a new web site created by YouTube. Totlol
This site is devoted only for kids - kid videos only. My youngest son likes to sit on my lap while we play song after song. Even my older son will stop and watch the videos (when he thinks no one is noticing).
Totlol is still new and it looks like YouTube is still working through usability problems. However, this site is great for parents who don't want to spend a lot of time searching through YouTube's enormous and sometimes not so kid-friendly collection.
Here's one of the more popular songs on this site. My kids love this song. I love this song! The rock group Barenaked Ladies recently came out with a children's CD - Snack Time. Yes, it's a weird name for a group who creates children CDs. However, the CD is great and so is this song, 7-8-9.
Flying a Freak Flag

I can't stop laughing at this video. If I had been the moderator of this spelling bee, I don't think I could have stayed in the room!
Playing with Cell Phones
My four year old and I play a game with my cell phone.
I sit on the couch upstairs. My four year old sits on the couch downstairs. From my cell phone, I call our home phone number and my four year old - with complete excitement - answers.
Then we talk. We talk and we talk and we talk. My son tells me all about his day, what he wants for Christmas, his least favorite foods, and how mad his brother makes him. Through this wonderful game, my son reveals more of his thoughts than he ever does when we're eating pizza at the dinner table.
I wonder, when my son is 12, will he still play this game with me?
How Do You Wake the Living Dead?
This week, for the first time in about a year, I overslept. On Sunday night, I set my alarm clock to 6:00 a.m. and went to bed. On Monday morning, my eyes flew open to 7:30 a.m. with my alarm clock shut off! My week has been like this - about an hour and a half off - not quite there - and fueled entirely by peanut butter cups and Diet Coke.
