Half of Americans oppose Obama's immigration lawsuit: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Half of Americans reject President Barack Obama's lawsuit against Arizona's controversial immigration law, with only a third supporting the move, according to a Gallup poll released Friday.

With key midterm elections just around the corner in November, the Obama administration is facing strong support for the law, which makes it a crime to be in the state -- bordering Mexico -- without proper immigration papers.

U.S. Majority Supports AZ Immigration Law

By a margin of 50% to 33%, Americans oppose the U.S. federal government’s lawsuit against the recent Arizona immigration law.  President Obama has publicly stated that he opposes the Arizona legislation, which may prove to have ramifications in the fall.

The current administration is moving against public opinion, and these new results are in line with previous polls taken by Gallop.  According to the numbers, supporters of the lawsuit are less likely to be following the news very closely.

The official opposition to the AZ immigration law has been centered around the Democrats and current Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.  In contrast, 80%  Republicans, 56% of Independents, and 27% of Democrats oppose the lawsuit.
