Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

What the Flag Means to Me

The US Flag represents the freedoms that our Founding Fathers fought so hard for. In many ways, I think many people just take for granted the freedoms that we have in the United States.

The 13 stripes reminds me of the bavery of the original colonies. What they must have gone through over 200 years to establish this country.  The 50 Stars, representing the States.  You watch many shows that show how territories fought for and in some cases against statehood.

Almost every decision made by those men in the mid 1770's were made with Independence in mind. They had nothing else to worry about. They had one goal and they kept their eye on the prize.

As we continue to fight amongst ourselves to figure out what is best for the country and how to achieve these goals, we must all remember that we are fighting for the same country.  It is when people make the attacks personal, that things get ugly.  While I was running for Mayor of Cuday, I promised myself and those around me that the campaign would be run with a positive approach.  In talking to many people, they appreciated it.  I was told that the negative stuff is what makes good press, but I didn't care.

In talking a friend of over 40 years last week, we both came to the agreement that the changes in Government probably has more to do with people voting to get new ideas into Washington then the actual Tea Party Movement. On a side note, my buddy and I have opposite political views, but like the vast majority of Americans, we are more middle of the road, more alike then different.  But it is the Tea Party Movement and all of its rhetoric that gets the headlines.

Is it the party that makes bad decisions or is it the system?  Many a good individual gets elected to office on the promise of not being the same way the incumbant was.  But once that person arrives in Washington, then it seems that the gold old boys network takes over. Special interest groups get their feet in the door.  The amount of money spent by special interest is staggering.  Special interests want to make it harder for government to monitor and regulate their industry.  Yet, when a disaster occurs, then there is always the cry as to how did government allow this to happen.  I would answer that by asking the special interest groups the same question.

As we reflect today on Flag Day 2010, please think about our Founding Fathers and the things that were important to them.  How do you think it applies today, does it apply today?
