Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

Travelers

I recently received a call from a guy I used to travel with quite often on business. About 8 years ago I took a corporate job that required some travel. In the 3 years or so with the company, I traveled about 32 weeks a year, home on weekends. I was always home for the important things like kids concerts. I decided that I wanted to watch my kids grow up and gave up the travel.

As we were catching up, the conversation turned to the airlines charging for checked baggage. Being in the transportation industry, we both could not understand why they would encourage passengers to carry on their luggage.Unless I had an overnight trip, I always checked my bag.  The more bags being carried on flights, the longer the waits to get through security.  Speaking from the business traveler stand point, not something we enjoyed.

Then, once on the plane, there was the art of fitting your bag into the overhead bin. How many have you flown and seen somebody with a carryon who could not lift it up to put in the bin, it was either too heavy or they were not quite tall enough to reach the bin. Then you had the last minute traveler who has a carryon, but there is no overhead bin space left. All of this would lead to a delay of the flight. I can’t imagine what it is like today since most airlines are now charging for checked bags and allowing free carryon’s.

It makes me wonder if the continued cutting of airline fares is going to increase the cost of all of the extra’s on the flight. that used to be free.  I see that some airlines charge for a pillow and blanket now. Pretty soon, airlines are going to look like my car on long family trips with coolers, pillows, blankets and bags of food. What is the cost going to be when they have to spend additional time cleaning the cabin and getting ready for the next flight?
