Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

Cudahy Parks

As the weather begins to get warmer I have begun to think about all of the parks in the City of Cudahy.  During the last election, a lot of people mentioned that the parks are one of the great assets for the City.  I could not agree more.  I have spent a lot of time the last 3 or 4 years in the parks with my family, through baseball, softball and general recreation.

My thoughts on the parks are probably not the direction most people would take.  I am concerned as to who will be responsible for the general upkeep of the parks.  It wasn't until the last 5 or 6 years did I realize that each of the parks in Cudahy are Milwaukee County parks, not City parks.  With the continued cutbacks on the park system, how are we going to maintain the park system?

While campaigning for Mayor I did not realize how much people are relying on their own resources to use the parks.  I have talked to various people who, in the past relied on County park workers to set up and clean up for various events.  Now the responsability has fallen on the individual groups or the City.

We had a picnic in one of the parks last August, on Sunday, and the restrooms were not open.  How can we expect familes to want to utilize the parks if the restrooms are not going to be open.  Not all picnics are planned in advance to get permits. Some of the best picnics are the ones that are thrown together at the last minute and familes just go to have fun.

In order for the City of Cudahy to maintain the importance of the parks, is the City ready to take on additional financial responsability for their upkeep?  What is the cost going to be? If Cudahy is going to spend resources on the parks, will the County reimburse the City for the services we are providing? Are we going to have to rely on Friends of the Parks to maintain the general upkeep? Are other volunteer groups going to be needed for the upkeep?

Last week in the Journal, there was mention that Waukesha County is allowing for more "natural park land" in other words they are cutting less of the grass? (http://www.jsonline.com/news/waukesha/90322567.html)  Is this how we are going to start seeing some of the parks in Cudahy? I sure hope not.
