James Krapf, a firefighter in Chester, Pennsylvania, has chosen to be suspended without pay instead of obey a new department rule which mandates that all lockers be stripped of stickers and statements, be it political, cartoon, union, or otherwise.
The 11-year veteran says he refused to remove a sticker of Old Glory. "The chief came out and said 'You have to remove your stickers,' I said 'No disrespect chief, but I'm not taking the flag off," he said. He was then asked to leave by the officer.
Marine Corps vet and Fire Commissioner James Johnson says the issue "is not about the American flag or patriotism.” Krapf is standing firm, and has support. Union president Stacy Landrum said, "We applaud Jim Krapf because these colors don't run."
