Problems on East Squire Avenue In Cudahy

Development, DPW, Cudahy

You might remember when I asked Mayor McCue (City Matters Part 2)

if there was there a blunder on the road construction on E Squire Ave and he claimed he didn’t know what I was talking about.  But later he did know, well here is more information on it the construction issues.

I was told by Kevin Tschohl that “It didn’t work…All that wasted money for the 2nd time…..The curbs were set too high by the last minute decision of David Duda.”

Here are email exchanges between Kevin Tschohl and Mayor Ryan McCue and a picture of the problem at the end.

It didn't work, just more wasted money.  Now, besides water coming into the basement Jason's and my sidewalk has an ice pond.

Mr. Tschohl,

From what I was told, your downspout is causing your problem.  The surface is pitched toward the street.  When water from your downspout hits the frozen concrete it will freeze.  This is a condition of winter that occurs throughout the city and has nothing to do with the construction in front of you building.

Sincerely,

Ryan McCue, Mayor

City of Cudahy

Talk to Willy Lohr, He came over and saw it.  He even knows that the curb height is too high.  The water cannot get to the street.  I was a witness when the first stamped concrete crew told David Duda that the curb height was too high and David Duda replied that "the curb height was a last minute decision"!  I'm still waiting for the list of things that have and have not been signed off of the Squire ave. project.

Mr. Trchohl,

The City of Cudahy has done as much as is feasibly practical to accommodate all the issues on a job of this type.  The reason for the curb height grade is because the curb grade had to be reengineered due to your request midway through the project that the city removes a bump out in front of your property.

I understand that Tim Birkel has worked with you in the past to resolve all of your issues.  If you would like, I can have him come out and show you how the newly replaced sidewalk is pitched properly.

The only thing left on the punch list for Milwaukee General is the replacement of a railing at the condos and replacement of a sidewalk block.

The curb height was put in before all the sidewalks were installed.  The City did not change the curb just in front of my or Jason's building.  The sidewalk across the street (which is City property) is completely flooded and the sidewalk across Papa Luigi's is a mud hole.  The approach on that same alley holds water.  The street by the intersection of Packard and Squire is a small lake because there is no storm sewer.  I have more information and pictures to prove more.

From Kevin Tschohl

The property owners have been asking since last spring why the road hasn’t been finished.  We were told that the final surface would be put on in August 2009.Then we were told the road hasn’t been signed off on yet.  Now, I just found out that the City paid the contractors along time ago.  What is going on here?  I have e-mailed the City and the comptroller asking the price of the original contract and what was the final price.  I can only hope that the taxpayers of Cudahy will help us get to the bottom of this project.
