Guest Blog By Jerry K - A Finest Example Of Public Sector Disconnect

Guest Blog, Public Sector Unions, Roads

I recently watched, during rush hour traffic, in Milwaukee on 43rd street, three public sector workers striping the road.  Traffic was backed up and one of the workers kept yelling at the cars as if it were the drivers fault.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, Oct. 22nd. The Sheridan Park Friends will have their Sheridan Shelter & Grounds Autumn Cleanup from 10 am until noon. This event will begin with a short meeting about membership. Then the group will plant bulbs, fertilize around the shelter, pick up trash and clean invasive brush including burdock under the pine trees. There will be refreshments and good company.

Please meet at Sheridan Shelter Area 1, at the east end of Layton Avenue in Cudahy. Please bring work gloves if you have them. The Friends would also appreciate any donations of bulbs.

Voting Rights Act of 1965

I had a lively discussion with my wife after the news that Milwaukee County will have to supply Spanish ballots for elections. One of her main problems is that there is the cost factor.  During the discussion, I reminded my wife that my hope is to have a picture ballot available when my son is eligible to vote (I have had somebody float this idea to the Government Accountability Board).  My son may or not be able to read, but he can make his own choices in life when he has pictures.  I realize that there will be a cost to this, but I feel that it is a fair way to allow him the ability to make an educated decision when he votes. As most of you know, my kids get both side of the story in my home. There have been those that commented to me when I bring up the topic of a picture ballot, that it would probably help a lot of people in the electoral process. What is wrong with giving voters the tools that they need to make an educated choice?

My understanding for the Spanish ballots is based on The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (http://www.justice.gov/crt/about/vot/intro/intro_b.php) Section 203 (http://www.justice.gov/crt/about/vot/sec_203/203_brochure.php.

Why Not Cudahy

A month or so ago, I was talking with a City official.  I mentioned that I had not seen or heard much about what was going on in town.  The official replied "that was because there really was not much happening".  As we continued to talk, I got the impression that the various groups in our City all have their own agendas.

Since this conversation, my travels around the state have taken me to Madison, Kenosha, Racine, New Berlin, Brown Deer, Menasha, Sheboygan and many other communities in between. I have also been down to the area I grew up in in Northwest Indiana.  I am seeing development  happening in these communities.  I do not stop and talk to people and ask what is happening, but I am seeing development happening.  Buildings going up. Some appear to be apartments.  Others appear to be strip malls. There is development happening.

What a Difference a Year Makes

toilet paper, Homecoming, high school

Thank you to whoever did it. Students, parents, faculty, magnanimous volunteers. Whever you are. Thank you for cleaning the waste paper from the Oak Creek Parkway side of the high school that was celebratorily tp'd on Homecoming night.

Last year remnants of Homecoming-festivity toilet paper hung from trees and clumped the ground along the Parkway well into the holidays. Here it is only mid-October and the area tp'd this year is paperless.

Walmart, Common Council, Patrick Stoner, Raymond Navarro, William Faulkner

William Faulkner wrote his Snopes trilogy, "The Hamlet", "The Town" and "The Mansion", in the 1940s and '50s, but it could have written today.

The novels are set in Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi, but could have been set in South Milwaukee.
