More Sales Taxes Coming

Milwaukee County, Taxes

County sales tax

Also Tuesday, state Rep. Christine Sinicki (D-Milwaukee) said she was introducing legislation to authorize the county to increase its sales tax by up to 0.5% to pay for parks, recreation and culture.  That would raise an estimated $65 million a year.  It would serve as companion legislation to a separate bill to increase the county sales tax by another 0.5% to pay for transit.

If both passed, that would match what voters approved in an advisory referendum in November, Sinicki said.  Gov. Jim Doyle has said he would support the 0.5% sales tax for transit but has not said whether he would sign into law a county sales tax increase for parks.

Under the two measures, the county's sales tax would increase from the current 0.5% to 1.5% and generate about $130 million more a year for the county.

Walker has said he'd veto any sales tax increase if approved by the Legislature and governor. At least 13 supervisors would have to vote to override such a veto for the sales tax to be implemented.

Remember how the Milwaukee County breakdown was for the sales tax.  Then think how should the Christine Sinicki should be voting.

There are rumblings that County Supervisor Patricia Jursik could face a recall if she votes YES on the Milwaukee County sales tax increase as her constituents said NO during the referendum election last year.

Update - County Supervisor Patricia Jursik is in full support to the new County Wheel Tax and next week CRG will have a press release about it.
