The Way I See It!

I am an Ultra-Conservative, Alpha-Male, True Authentic Leader, Type "C" Personality, who is very active in my community; whether it is donating time, clothes or money for Project Concern or going to Common Council meetings and voicing my opinions. As a blogger, I intend to provide a different viewpoint "The way I see it!" on various world, national and local issues with a few helpful tips & tidbits sprinkled in.

Mayoral Debate Format If I was Doing It

2010 Election, Cudahy, Mayor, Debates

If I would be in charge of designing and moderating the Cudahy Mayoral Debate, this is how I would do it.

This is based on 3 candidates running prior to the Primary election.  This will give the voters a unique opportunity to pose questions to the candidates before going to the polls.

This debate promises to be unlike any that Cudahy has seen before!

Candidates will not see the questions in advance.  Only the main topic will be known!

The two and a half hours (2.5 hours) forum will come in three rounds.

Sitting order for the candidates will be picked out of a hat in front of the audience that day.  The candidate on the audience’s left side will be number one and will start first.  Left to right.

Each candidate will get a chance to answer the same question and once the candidates have finished answering the question, each candidate will get a thirty-second rebuttal.  Again, starting with candidate number 1.  Left to right.

Candidates do not need to use up all of the allotted time if they choose not to or if the question’s answer doesn’t warrant it.

As the moderator, if I feel the “Candidate” is refusing to answer questions, rambling answers, heated exchanges or they are vague in their answers, I will stop them and they loose their turn including the rebuttal time!

Prior to the start of the rounds, each candidate will be given two minutes for opening statements.

Total time (2 minutes x 3 candidates) = 6 minutes

Each candidate will be given one-minute answers for each question, thirty-second rebuttals to follow once each candidate has a chance to answer the question.

Round One (approximately 45mins):  It consists of questions three (3) questions from the moderator and two (2) questions from each of the three (3) panelists.

(Panelists will consist of a Cudahy Business Owner, a Cudahy Homeowner, and a Cudahy Renter)

Total time (3 questions x 3 candidates x 1.50 answer time) + (2 questions x 3 panelists x 3 candidates x 1.50 answer time)

(13.5 mins + 27 mins) = 40.5 minutes for 9 questions

Round Two (approximately 45mins):  It consists of Audience directly posing questions to candidates and questions from email.  The floor will be open to the public take non-preselected questions from audience members.

Please allow only the Cudahy residents to ask the questions to be fair to all!

In total about 10 questions, 6 from the audience members and 4 from emailed questions.

Again, starting with candidate number 1.  Left to right.

(10 questions x 3 candidates x 1.50 answer time) = 45 minutes

Round Three (approximately 45mins): This will be the high point of the forum when the candidates will be allowed a “crossfire round,” providing them confrontations via the face-to-face opportunity to ask another candidate a question and then be allowed a rebuttal.

Again, starting with candidate number 1.  Left to right.

At the end, each candidate will be given a two-minute closing statement/final thought.

Total time (2 minutes x 3 candidates) = 6 minutes

Before the audience leaves they will fill out a survey card not only declaring the winner in the eye’s of the audience, but the will rank them top to bottom.

Survey cards will have the Candidate’s names in descending alphabetical order (A – Z) by last name.

Survey cards will look something like this:

Candidate Key Code

A = Tony Day

B = Kevin Fech

C = Ryan McCue

Please place the corresponding letter A-C for each of the three questions

Which candidate finished first and won the debate?  ___

Which candidate finished seconded in the debate?  ___

Which candidate finished last in the debate and should go home?  ___

Mayoral debate showcases candidates’ differing views.

We’re putting them on the spot and seeing them on their feet.  That’s not something voters get to see very often.  This debate gives voters something completely different from the campaign flyers to go on!

Now's your chance to help shape the debate -- tell me what topics we should take on.

This is more than just a debate, it’s a public event.  That’s right!  Anyone can come and be a part of the action.
