This is an update to the blog post I did called Caution! Lipsticks May Contain Lead
FDA: Lead Levels in Lipstick Not a Concern
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics at the Breast Cancer Fund has called on the US Food and Drug Administration to set standards that would lower lead levels in lipstick to the lowest levels possible. No lead in lipstick standard currently exists.
The campaign's national coordinator, Lisa Archer, claims that lead levels in the average lipstick are 10x higher than the allowable level for candy. Lead levels in lipsticks tested by the DDA were between 0.09 and 3.06 parts per million.
On its website, the FDA says, "lipstick, intended for topical use, is only ingested incidentally and in very small quantities and the FDA does not consider the lead levels that it found in the lipsticks to be a safety concern."
