Genetically modified bugs in
Initially industrial yeast or strains of E. coli, their DNA is then modified to excrete what is comparable to crude oil instead of the normally excreted fatty acids.
The company plans to use waste agricultural products to avoid the problems associated with using corn. LS9 states that if Brazilian sugar cane is used it could produce a $50 dollar barrel of oil. Commercial scale production is planned for 2011.
