I am an Ultra-Conservative, Alpha-Male, True Authentic Leader, Type "C" Personality, who is very active in my community; whether it is donating time, clothes or money for Project Concern or going to Common Council meetings and voicing my opinions. As a blogger, I intend to provide a different viewpoint "The way I see it!" on various world, national and local issues with a few helpful tips & tidbits sprinkled in.
It was just announced on Friday to the employees of the Highway 100
The new Supercenter will open in early 2012. The current store will be left open with basic stock merchandise being transferred to the new store and old discontinued and clearance merchandise being sold at steep discounts until all is gone.
Once the store is emptied, the store will be taken down for additional parking.
Construction is to start sometime in January 2010.
It is just too bad
It should say Going instead of coming, cause its going somewhere else. Sad. but hey at least we know when the next garlic mustard pickers will be in Cudahy.
About 3 months ago, I made a purchase in the Sporting Goods department there, because the one in Franklin did not have something, but they held it for me in Greenfield. The clerk at that time said that they were trying for this, and hoped it would happen. I told him I was from Cudahy, and he just laughed! He said that Cudahy made a BIG MISTAKE by not taking that site, and that Walmart had their eye on Cudahy for a long time. Apparently he knew alot about the situation because he stated that one former Mayor's were anti walmart, the past mayor was for walmart, and the current one was also against. He truly thought it was stupid of Cudahy to pass up on an opportunity like this, because since he has worked at Walmart for 10 years, was probably going to be promoted when a superstore opened in Greenfield. Now, fortunately for him, and Greenfield and a progressive business friendly Mayor like Neitzke, they get a Super Walmart and we, the citizens of Cudahy and Mayor Ryan Mccue own a polluted weed infested field with a rusted shell of a skating rink. Good for them! Cudahy citizens make sure you support this super walmart, and those on 27th street in Franklin and Milwaukee. Keep your spending dollars going out of the city, the Mayor likes to see that!
Now the Walmart clerks are the authority on what a good / bad decision is?
Not everybody sees the situation thru your eyes my friend.
The clerk knows that he will benefit along with many other current Wal Mart employees. The bottom line is that at this time while other communities in better areas open their arms to Wal Mart, Cudahy turned their back. So be it, I still am waiting for Plan B, heck plan d would be good.
Any plan is better then present direction. While WalMart haters always got something to say about how bad WalMart is, you have a very tough time finding a WalMart employee that would agree. WalMart was the best option we had, in fact the only option. If I had my way all WalMart haters should cover the taxes and clean up on that land, since they got their wish. WalMart was going to do this. They were also going to bring jobs to Cudahy. I forgot the bars hired at least 5-10 people from Cudahy. What a joke. The mayor gave up 300+ jobs. Decent part time jobs for the blue collar community we are.
Then they say WalMart would close all the small businesses in Cudahy. That's happening and we don't have the WalMart to blame. Maybe if these haters would see the light and realize that this was the best offer Cudahy has had ever. But I know they can't stop spitting the same old song about the couple of bad things that WalMart had happen 20 years ago.
WalMart would have Cudahy thriving again in no time. They bring other businesses with them every where they start up. I dare you to try and find an area that hasn't grown when WalMart opened in the area. Good Luck!! I mean it. Your search will be hard, but fueled by your hate I think you will try for days and weeks. Maybe then the rest of us adults can have an educated conversation while they are busy.
No offense, but Cudahy's best days are most likely behind them....like 50 years ago. It is a decent place to raise a family but let's not make more out of it than it is.....similar to South Milwaukee, very land locked and will not attract visitors from the outside because there is NOTHING there.
I personally love Walmart. I live out of state now but we spend over $500 a month there on groceries, etc.
Sad statement from BTA to just give up trying to fix a problem. I guess he/she has the same opinion about America at this point. Why bother? If this were the attitude of the folks in the Historic 3rd ward of Milwaukee then it would not be the lively place it is now.
I guess BTA doesnt realize that Cudahy is on Lake Michicgan so its not land locked. You wouldnt say the same issues face Bayview or St Francis, yet Cudahy is situatied similiarly.
That is the issue.....the most valuable land in Cudahy will never be developed at the expense of the parks. Big K, family dollars, pay day loans, etc are DUMPY busineses that give the city a black eye.
Technically, no it is not land locked since the east side is the lake...however, there is virtually no property to develop. The 3rd ward is now a hip and cool place because of the renovation of old warehouse buildings and its proxmity (right next to) downtown Milwaukee.
Im glad that BTA agrees now. Renovation and investment are the key to growth, not just giving up.
If you build it, they will come.
So many comments, however, so little actions by our elected officials. What are they waiting for , oh my,,. that's right, reelction is right around the corner. Don't want to rock the boat now.
We would love an IKEA, Macy's, and all the other upscale shops, but be realistic, they don't seem to be coming any time soon.
Our city think tanks can dream all they want, however, they need to become realistic. Is it just luck that Sonic is going to Oak Creek? Two Sendiks in Frankin? Again, I suppose luck.
Our elected officials have a non business friendly attitude. If you don't believe me, just get a local business owner that is not tied at the hip to the Cudahy Chamber of Kommerce to talk to you. It would be amazing if you LISTEN, what you would hear....
well, well, well let's get over not having a wal-mart, move on. instead of us vs. them how about we. we have a nice town, we are fortunate to have a low crime rate, we now have an anti gang ordinance,we offer alot, if one looks past the negative comments. my point is?? with any change it takes time, the city is cleaning up the rundown properties, but homeowners must also repair and keep their homes in good conditions. not happy about the library condo's?? at least something different was attempted. non business attitude? lets have discussions with the store front landlords to improve their properties. also the people of the area should try and support local businesses.we had success, jalapeno loco started in cudahy, but moved when it needed more space. gormet grill was at packard plaza two years ago,. great food, great owners, but alas no one was there to support it. sheridan's is a success story.let's work together from within.
Joe S.
Exactly what local fair would you say is worth going to for a family besides CityLounge, SoupLaddle, and Sheridans? Let me think... graveyard records? cigar shop? laundry? one of the 15 corner taverns? maybe one of the 10 used car lots? hmmmm.... Give a list of the local stores you frequent and maybe that will help get the word out on these shops.
You list low crime. I guess you havent been aware of the continual garage robberies and drug issues in Cudahy.
Working together is a great idea, but the problem is there is not a correct plan of action installed by the City government currently. No multi-lateral discussions are open. There are places that have already figured out how to revigorate a city, yet those lessons arent being followed.
Joe S makes a couple of good points, however, none of the successful businesses were started under the current mayor, and council. City Lounge, Sheridans and the expansion of papa luigi's were all begun under the former mayor and council. The anti gang ordinance, while used sparingly, has not had a MAJOR impact on gangs, as proposed!
If you haven't driven down packard avenue in the last several months, their are more vacant store fronts than in 2007. Breakwater is the latest victum!
Walmart, like them or not, gave the city the best chance of building a retail complex with maybe an applebees, best buy, or other stores who gravitate to a major retail hub such as them. You can list stores until their are blue in the face, however, the question they ask of the city is.. Who is the anchor to bring us there? The park, while a vital asset, is NOT a retail anchor to bring in new business to the city.
The current elected officials have SHOT DOWN retail development on penn and layton and at the former ice port site. Do you think others percieve Cudahy as business friendly? Unfortunately, you need to get out there in the business world and find out that Cudahy currently does NOT have a business friendly reputation. If it did, people would be busting down the doors (like sonic and sendiks) to build here, not in Franklin nor Oak Creek nor Greenfield, where progressive Mayor's are attracting businesses.
This city does have alot of good things going for it, however, lacks leadership! Without that, not very much will change.
jtozz, garage robberies happened in cudahy 50 years ago when i was young. drug issues were around 40 years ago.as for all the car lots, again they were around 40 - 50 years ago. as for my list of businesses, sheridan's, la serenta, samano's, city lounge, papa luigi's, soup laddle, layton gardens, yes all local. the idea jtozz, is to have LOCAL business in place.as i remember, mayor jake was too scared to have an anti gang ordinance. the gang problem at the local bar has been taken care of by the police, and city councils. look at your half empty glass, and see it as half full.
Not sure if you knew this, but Layton Gardens burned down.
Those you listed are restaurants. What about local service or product businesses that litter Packard?
You seem to agree that local businesses need to be in place, yet you dont understand how to attract those businesses to the area. There isnt an upscale owner that wants to "try" a restaurant next to a tavern or used car lot. What about bringing sustainable businesses that bring family jobs to the area as well? Not just tourist or casual dinners?
Please have a bit more foresight than saying things were bad 50years ago so as long as they are bad now, that doesnt count.
JT Ozz, many good points. Those who are running things believe Cudahy will be the next east side, cedarburg, or mequon. Unfortunately, it will not be that. While we all agree we want to make cudahy better, everytime someone says the W word, those who favor it are out to ruin the city.
Even if the Mayor does tear down the iceport in 09 as a reelection ploy, don't expect anything coming there soon. You don't see developers running all around do you? Name at least 2 new projects in Milwaukee County that have begun to build, since 2007? You will be hard pressed!
