Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

Health Care

Let me start by saying that I do not agree with everything in the health care bill.  But I do not think that there is any person out there who does not think that the health care industry needs some changes. For years I have heard about how the rising cost of health care prevents me from getting a pay raise.  In some cases, I have even had to contribute more to my personal health care costs.

As with any new law there are ammendments made over time to adjust for the changing times.  Heck, the US Constitution has 27 Amendments.  But with the health care bill there had to be a starting point.

With everything else going on during this political season, I thought it was important to show a new law that has taken effect.

Make a Difference Day

Saturday, October 23 marks the 20th Anniversary of Make a Difference Day (  It is 1 day set aside to focus on community service.  A time when government, corporations, no-profit groups and regular citizens come together to make a change in their community.

I was recently in a meeting where we talked about volunteers for the organization.  The discussion turned to having a fee assigned to each family and it would be returned once the family put in a certain amount of volunteer time.  This really made me wonder if people truely understand what it is to be a volunteer.  I would bet that proably 75% of the people would be content to just pay the fee and not have to give of their time.  This almost defeats what volunteerism is.

Be Informed

Tuesday, November 2 is another Election Day.  As with all Elections, this is a very important Election.  We are still waging the war against terrorism, we have health care issues and we still have way to many people either unemployed or under employed. There is no quick fix for any of these issues.

Since we all have time, please be informed of your decisions. I have been going to candidates websites and learning about the issues that affect me.  Jobs, health care and people with developmental disabilities are my top 3 choices.  I have had the opportunity to hear most of the candidates speak on disability issues, so I have some information to base a decision on. See my previous blog:

Young Athletes

The comment that I have heard the most in reference to the Challenger Baseball Story (,0,421962.story) was that every kid, every parent, every sibling, every Buddy,  had a smile on their face throughout the story.  For those who were not familiar with the league, I told them that this is the reaction that we have every week from the kids, parents, siblings and buddy's. These athletes are doing what they love because they want to, not because somebody is making them do it.  These parents are only giving their children an opportunity to play a game they may have loved as a kid.  I have never seen a parent trying to live out their dream, through their child.  When the kids have had enough, then that it is it until next week.

As I continued the conversation with one individual, the topic turned to today's young athletes.  The question was "how come the kids with the most God given talent, do not always put in the same effort as those who need to work he hardest to achieve acceptable success?"  It makes me wonder if the "better athletes" are actually having as much fun as those who need to work the hardest to attain their goals. Over time,  I have come to realize that God given talent will only take you so far.
