New Kid's View

Family lured Jerrianne and her husband to South Milwaukee in 2002 from Southern California where she worked as, first, a journalist, then, as a court information officer. She now stays busy with media-relations consulting, playing with her three grandchildren (part of the lure), writing, discovering her new environs, and hoping her garden will produce before the first fall frost.

Are flooded, fouled houses worth less?

South Milwaukee, property values, assessments, city assessor

Following is a message a South Milwaukee neighbor sent to the city assessor. It will be interesting to see if city officials are as diligent in taking home un-improvments, such as rain-triggered flooding and sewage backups, into consideration when determining property values as they are in taking home improvements into consideration when assessing property values.

City of South Milwaukee Assessor:

I live on Parkway Dr. and we had sewerage in our basement in 1998, 2008 and again in 2010. In 2008 it cost me almost $10,000 to get the basement dried out and cleaned and throwing away many items from our basement. There are a number of homes in our area Parkway Drive and Hemlock Court that have had the same problems. I am aware of other areas in the City with similar problems.

I am trying to determine if the City Assessor takes sewerage backup problems into consideration when assessing the value of a home. Anyone that has encountered sewerage backups will have to disclose this if and when they would place their home on the open market. I am sure that the potential for sewerage in ones basement will have to impact the market price of a home.

In discussing these problems with people in the City government like our aldermen and City Engineer it appears that any solution, if there is one, will take years to implement. Any future periods of heavy rain could result in more sewerage in our basements.

I believe the Market value of houses affected by sewerage backups will be impacted and as a result the assessed value of these homes needs to be reduced.

I would like to know if this is being considered! I would like to know what process my neighbors and I need follow to have our assessed values reduced as a result of sewerage in our basements.

Neighbor Ron asks a good question:

Interesting article ..... is anything like this being planned for South Milwaukee?

Oak Creek Parkway Crapped by TP'ing Vandals

parks, trash, high school, Scott Walker

It happens every year about this time, only increasingly worse -- homecoming night is capped with trash being strewn all over Oak Creek Parkway along the north side of South Milwaukee High School from 15th Avenue to  beyond the railroad overpass toward Chicago Avenue.

It seems the children have way too much time and toilet paper-expense money on their hands.
