International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Friday Dec 3,  is International Day of Persons with Disabilities.  The following is taken from the UN website.

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December was established by the International Year for Disabled Persons (1981). The Day aims to promote a better understanding of disability issues with a focus on the rights of persons with disabilities and gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life of their communities. The goal of full and effective participation of persons with disabilities in society and development was established by the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1982.
Through the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons (1982) and the Standard Rules on Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (1993), the United Nations promotes the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The Organization’s commitment to the full and effective participation of all human rights by persons with disabilities is deeply rooted in the quest for social justice and equity in all aspects of societal development.

Career Change

I have recently completed my training modules for a part time job in the social work field.  Having spent all of my adult life to this point in transportation field, this is a big change.  I am going from having a great deal of knowledge to knowing very little.  This is almost a bit scary.

I recently participated in my shadow visits.  I observed a couple of home visits as the experienced consultant conducted the annual reviews.  I never realized how much I did not know. It is very humbling.  While I have some knowledge in developmental disabilities issues, the shadow visits were to individuals with physical disabilities. The visit reminded me of the phrase "you don't know what you don't know". And it is obvious there is much to learn.  I will also be helping those with developmental disabilities as well as the elderly.

Buzz's Bunch

This past weekend, we were Welcomed by Coach Buzz Wiliams and the entire Marquette Men's Basketball Family to attend a game and given a chance to interact with the players prior to the game.

For those who are not aware of Buzz's Bunch, Buzz Williams, the Head Mens Basketball Coach at Marquette hosts a group on individuals who have physical and/or developmental disabilities at a basketball camp in the summer and a Marquette game in the winter.  This is our second year patricipating and it is a great experience.  Not only for Tyler and the rest of my family, but also for everybody involved in the Marquette Mens Basketball program.  From the office staff, to cheerleaders.  From every coach to every player.

Setting the Record Straight

Contrary to somes public perception, none of those served tonight were intoxicated nor were they offensive in any way.
