New Kid's View

Family lured Jerrianne and her husband to South Milwaukee in 2002 from Southern California where she worked as, first, a journalist, then, as a court information officer. She now stays busy with media-relations consulting, playing with her three grandchildren (part of the lure), writing, discovering her new environs, and hoping her garden will produce before the first fall frost.

Children's Book Event at SM Library

South Milwaukee Library, Kathryn Heling, Deborah Hembrook, Janet Halfmann, Bonnie Leick, Milwaukee Public Schools, Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

Four award winners -- three authors and an illustrator -- headline South Milwaukee Library's  annual Children's Book Week Celebration on May 9 from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.. The theme of this year's event is "Dream Big".

The program will feature story times, drawing, student art, activities, selling and signing of books, prizes, and refreshments.

Co-authors Kathryn Heling and Deborah Hembrook of Waukesha have collaborated on and had 12 books for children published. They will read from on of those books, Ten Grouchy Groundhogs

South Milwaukee’s Janet Halfmann, who has won numerous awards for some of the 35 children’s books she has had published, will read from one of her most recent books, Home in the Cave.  This story features Baby Bat, who loves his cave home and is afraid to leave it. He explores the cave with a friend and learns about other creatures that live there. Kids attending the event will light up the pitch-black cave with flashlights.

Illustrator Bonnie Leick of Milwaukee has illustrated a number of books and stories in Highlights magazine. She will involve the kids in drawing creepy crawlers from her book, Alien Invaders  That book is about a curious child who compares small garden creatures to what he knows of space invaders.
The program, presented jointly by the library, South Milwaukee Public Schools and the Wisconsiin chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, is free and will be held in the children's section of the South Milwaukee Public Library, 1907 10th Ave. For more infomation, call the library at 414-768-8195.

Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

E. W. Luther School, Janet Horrigan

On this last day of Teacher Appreciation Day, I want to give a great shout-out to E.W. Luther teacher Janet Horrigan. I volunteer a few hours a week in her classroom and she has instilled in me an even greater respect for public school teachers than I did before. She is about the most capable teacher I've seen in action, handles crises and challenges so smoothly and in a way to minimize disruption and negative impact on her class.

Her diligence to being prepared, having to spend many hours attending after-school meetings, evening school functions and many more school-related duties that have to be attended to on evenings and weekends is impressive -- and exhausting.

Luther's Buzzy Day

Beepod, Char Bee, Charlie Koenen, E.W. Luther Elementary School, Mrs. Horrigan

Char Bee buzzed into E.W. Luther Elementary School this week to show 1st and 2nd graders his novel design for beepods, which are more accessible and less expensive to maintain and harvest honey -- and, Char Bee says, make for happier bees -- than traditional human-made hives.
