New Kid's View

Family lured Jerrianne and her husband to South Milwaukee in 2002 from Southern California where she worked as, first, a journalist, then, as a court information officer. She now stays busy with media-relations consulting, playing with her three grandchildren (part of the lure), writing, discovering her new environs, and hoping her garden will produce before the first fall frost.

News from Garlic Mustard Pickers

Garlic Mustard Pickers, LaFollette Park

Garlic Mustard Pickers' fiddler Bobbie Groth sends this news:

The Garlic Mustard Pickers will do a performance at LaFollette Park (in West Allis) on Saturday, Sept 10th
Performance time is 4 to 6 pm.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of LaFollette Park.  Food is available for purchase...  If I'm remembering things correctly, last year they had a roast pig - well worth the money that was being charged.

We perform outdoors, surrounded by picnic tables.  The weather forecast calls for a nearly perfect day.

LaFollette Park is on 92nd Street, one "long block" north of Greenfield Ave.  It's very easy to get to from I-894.

Thanks for supporting our band!

Unrealistic Expectations

E.W Luther, 4K

One woman to another as they were leaving E. W. Luther school in Grant Park this morning after dropping tykes off for their second day of 4K: "I hope they learn something in school today."

"Yeah," replied the other woman. "They didn't learn anything yesterday."

This Cudahy Resident Really Cares

Walmart, Cudahy, Randy Hollenbeck, Ryan McCue

So there I was minding my own business yesterday, plowing through dozens of emails that had piled up during several days of scant to no attention when I came across one from a name that seemed vaguely familiar, but couldn’t think where I had seen it. I opened the email to find that the sender was taking me to task for falling down on my NOW bloggerly duties.

Oh, that’s where I’d seen the name. Randy Hollenbeck. He's another NOW blogger. I have only seen the name, but haven’t read his posts. Apparently, the reverse isn’t the case – or it wasn’t at least once.

Trashing Oak Creek Parkway

Oak Creek Parkway, South Milwaukee, high school, tp, vandalism

I haven't been out on Oak Creek Parkway this morning, but given that it's that time of year -- homecoming -- when Rocket gremlins work their toilet paper magic and transform the strip of public property across from the High School from South Milwaukee to Sewer Milwaukee, I'm facing the day -- and if not today, then the next few days -- with trepidation.

Call me a stick-in-the-mud, but it's beyond me why this annual act of vandalism -- the remnents of which hang around, quite literally, for months -- is shrugged off by perpetrators' parents, school officials and law enforcement as no more than "kids will be kids." Are the police powerless to prevent it or, given the inability to do so, unable to find and cite the vandals after the fact?

Half of an OK

Erik Brooks, toilet paper, school funding, tax dollars, Haitian earthquake victims

Finally went by the high school today to find toilet paper galore. The not-so-bad news is, it was mostly -- not all, but mostly -- confined to school property. Hooray for that.

South Milwaukee City Alderman Erik Brooks weighed in on his blog at http://southmilwaukeeblog.com/2011/09/23/seeing-white-homecoming-tp-follow-up/

Parkway is Toilet for at Least One

tping, South Milwaukee High School, homecoming, Oak Creek Parkway, yellow stream

Credit might be due Mother Nature rather than human hand in South Milwaukee High School homecoming toilet paper clean-up duty. Perhaps because she just got there first. At least that's what it looked like Tuesday, the first day school was back in session after homecoming weekend. To their credit, unlike last year, this year the tping students (and complicit adults ) for the most part confined their toilet-paper strewing to high school property along Oak Creek Parkway. If the students responsible for trashing that side of the high school property had planned--or were being told--to clean up after themselves, a couple of days of heavy rain pretty much beat them to it.

One student, however, took the idea that the Parkway is a toilet seriously, because there he was when I drove by Tuesday afternoon, standing on the wall by the path about 10 feet east of the railroad overpass with yellow stream flowing forth into, what? The creek below? I don't know. And he had a pal with him who was watching from the path beside him.

Thank you, South Milwaukee Police Department

South Milwaukee police, speeders

I appreciated so much seeing a South Milwaukee police officer stopping a driver on a residential street for speeding. I appreciated it not only because I'm hoping it will help reduce the excessive speed drivers travel in 25-mile-an-hour zones, but because it will serve as a reminder to me when I'm behind the wheel. It's not only wrong for me to rail at others who speed on my street, then to do so myself. It's also not safe--or legal.

So, thank you, South Milwaukee police, for helping to keep our streets safer and for the reminder.
