New Kid's View

Family lured Jerrianne and her husband to South Milwaukee in 2002 from Southern California where she worked as, first, a journalist, then, as a court information officer. She now stays busy with media-relations consulting, playing with her three grandchildren (part of the lure), writing, discovering her new environs, and hoping her garden will produce before the first fall frost.

Neither rain, nor snow...shall keep neighbors from acts of kindness

While I’m 13 time zones away from home, wading through thigh-deep flood waters and marveling at a good Samaritan who stood at the end of a wall warning those of us headed in the direction of the Grand Hyatt Jakarta – my roost away from home on my periodic work-related trips to this Indonesian capital – of uneven pavement lurking beneath the reddish murky deluge then lending a helping hand as we avoided that hazard and edged around the wall, I got emails about equally selfless acts of kindness among the neighbors back home in South Milwaukee.

First was my husband writing about the 6-7 inches of snow with drifts 10-12 inches deep that blanketed Southeast Wisconsin last Thursday night. When he went out to man shovel and blower, there was next-door neighbor Jerry Paprocki helping across-the-street neighbor Jim Wood clear Jim’s driveway. Once done with that good deed, Jerry headed toward our house and helped Hib finish the job on our driveway.

NOW blogs make Milwaukee Magazine

The Insider/Pressroom section of Milwaukee Magazine’s March issue included a piece about MyCommunityNOW.com blogs, of which “New Kid’s View” is one. Some NOW bloggers apparently engage in back-biting and political/ideological bickering. Some of the vitriol emerges in readers’ comments to blog postings. A few people have taken issue with some of my postings – one neighbor showed up at my front door wanting to discuss one, the police chief contacted NOW management about another, another NOW blogger sent me a sympathetic email about some snarky comments to yet another posting. For the most part, though, my intent is to make observations about the good things of South Milwaukee and my great South Milwaukee neighbors. Given that, I wrote a letter to Milwaukee Magazine editor saying so. If it’s published, it should appear in the April issue. If it isn’t, I’ll post it on this blog.
