I am an Ultra-Conservative, Alpha-Male, True Authentic Leader, Type "C" Personality, who is very active in my community; whether it is donating time, clothes or money for Project Concern or going to Common Council meetings and voicing my opinions. Logical Fallacies Part IV

Culture, Debates

Argument to the person

An argument to the person means attacking the person making the argument rather than the argument itself.  It’s also know as the ad hominem or ad homunem (Latin for “to the man”) attack.  When a person’s appearance, habits, or character is criticized instead of the merits of that person’s argument, the attack is a fallacy.  Here’s an example:  “We’d take her position on child abuse seriously if she were not so nasty to her husband.”  What does nastiness to an adult, though it isn’t nice, have to do with child abuse?  Most people when losing a debate do this “You always think you are right, but you are not!”

Elected Or Appointed

Cudahy, Election, Local Government

There is talk floating around that the City of Cudahy might want to change the Cudahy Clerk and Treasurer from being an elected position to an appointed one.  I think that would be a major step back.  We would be taking the people out of control and placing that control to either a Mayor or Council to appoint the positions.

While some say that if you appoint those positions, you can make sure the person has the right skill sets.  I am also told many other cities appoint them.  Okay, but now you can setup a position where the people in power place the person in those slots.  Now the person is no longer answerable to the people.  Having the positions stay as elected positions, cuts down on politics playing into the positions.  Quandary to having an election which is political verses someone playing politics and place who they want in, politics plays more in the appointment.  There is no guarantee that the person with the best skill set is picked while being appointed any ways.

Can you recognize earmarks?

While listing to WISN I have been hearing an ad run by The Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) Hospital Groups Launch "Fair Share for Health Care" Campaign WHA and WHIAC Aim to Raise Awareness of Medicaid Under Funding (9/15/08).  If this sounds familiar, they ran a similar ad in 2006 and 2007.  Some called this the hospital tax.

The current ad “We Can Do Better” states:

Wal-Mart and Cudahy Station Moving Along

Cudahy, retail, Wal-Mart

While at the last CDA meeting talking about the MOU, it was made clear that things are moving along.  Slow, but they are moving.  I was happy that the city is looking at putting a provision in place that if Wal-Mart would decide to close the store and move that we would not be left with just an empty building.

I would like to share an email I received that poses a question with Alderman Sean Smith leaving.
