DonorsChoose.org - An Online Charity that Allows Communities to Donate to Projects Created by Teachers
Here is an interesting concept. DonorsChoose.org. Donors Choose is an Internet-based charity that allows people to donate to projects created by teachers. The projects can cover a variety of items including classroom supplies, books, technology, and other specialties.
Recently I watched a show about Nikola Tesla. It was the Tesla Lives show at Discovery Word. (We have a membership, so we go quite often. My youngest son loves technology and so does his mom!)
Nikola Tesla, for those who do not know, was a super genius inventor of many things during the late 1800s/early 1900s (around the time of Thomas Edison). Among many things, he invented or discovered: the AC Motor, the radio, MRI X-Rays, wireless transmission of energy, the loud speaker, and the Tesla coil. After leaving the Tesla show, a quote stuck with me. It was a quote that was reiteratred over and over during the show.
It is not what you know. It is what you do with what you know.
There are people in my life - people in my family - friends - who are brilliant. From an outsider's perspective, these people are math geniuses - incredible at numbers and science, amazing at art and building things, or an encyclopedia of political information.
However, something holds these people back. Something keeps these people still. What is it? What keeps people inside their comfort zone? What keeps people from using their talents to the best of their ability?
Fear. I am sure of it. It's the fear of failing - and the fear of disappointing the people around us. I experience this fear myself. We all do.
I posted something like this several years ago - and thought it might be a good idea to do it again. Here is a web site that provides compliance and rating histories of the child care providers in this area.
Wisconsin's Licensed Child Care Search. This web site is very important to know about if you are using or plan to use the child care resources in this area.
For simplicity, I've included direct links to some of the local day cares and their history. Like I said when I first posted this information years ago, it's about time this type of information was made public.
Also child care providers are now rated by a system called YoungStar so that you can know how they measure up against research-based quality indicators. It would really be nice to see more of our child care providers participating in this rating program.
I'd like to plug an area program that I don't think a lot of people in this area know about, even though it's located right down the street at the Marion Center in Bay View.
Red Oak Young Writers. Here is a description taken directly from the web site:
Here is a great contest. KISS FM is holding an anti-bullying campaign. If you go to the KISS FM Contest web site and join the anti-bully pledge campaign (nothing more than clicking a button saying that you are against bullying), then you can enter your school district in the contest.
Text the Cudahy keyword CDCD to 71037 to vote. The school district with the most votes gets a concert at their high school. Text as many times as you want - of course keeping in mind your cell phone plan!
The deadline to vote is April 15th. The winning school will be announced by Wes, Rahny and Alley on April 20th.
