Why Not
I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.
Para-Transit Cuts
As I mentioned last week, I had the opportunity to listen to representatives from Milwaukee County Transit speak to a group of individuals with disabilities. One of the questions I asked was "how many rides would be affected by the proposed cuts to para-transit?"
The anwer is up to 40,000 rides could be affected if the Transit portion of the County Budget remains unchanged. What effect would this have on individuals with disabilities?
This would prevent some individuals from going to work. Earning income to pay taxes and buy consumer goods. Contributing to the local economy.
This would prevent some individuals from going to the grocery store. This could lead to a lot of take out and an unhealthy diet, thus affecting their health.
This would prevent some individuals from going to the doctor. Missed medical appointments result in higher health care costs long term.
This would prevent some individuals from being a part of their community by limiting their ability to attend fairs, concerts, ball games. Again, limiting their ability to contribute to the local economy and creating the potential for isolation, which could lead to depression, again another health risk.
This would prevent some individuals from having independence and visiting family and friends. Again, leading to isolation and the potential for depression.
Individuals with disabilities are a part of every one of our communities and they need to be allowed to remain active members.
