Is That Development On the IcePort? No, Just Moving Dirt Around.

Cudahy, Development

From the Business Journal

Iceport cleanup begins in Cudahy

Cudahy officials on Tuesday hired Endpoint Solutions Corp. for the $535,000 project to haul dirt onto the 21-acre former Iceport site so the land can be developed.

The project will be done by early August, said Cudahy Mayor Tony Day.  The property, which the city acquired in 2009, has contaminated soil from its past use as a bottling plant.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has approved Cudahy officials’ plan to bring clean dirt onto the property to cap the contaminated soil. Endpoint Solutions, Hales Corners, is getting the dirt from contractors that are excavating for the Interstate 94 reconstruction and extension of runways at General Mitchell International Airport.

The property is south of East Layton Avenue, less than a mile east of General Mitchell International Airport.

“It’s going to be nice to see flat land pretty soon,” Day said.

Completion of the project marks a milestone in the city’s multiyear effort to develop the property after a proposal to build an indoor ice-skating complex fell through.  Day said the city officials will market the property after the DNR decides whether there will be any development restrictions, such as limited depths for building foundations or pilings.
