Wanggaard wants probe of union letters campaign
Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) has asked three separate prosecuting attorneys to investigate a union-led campaign in which businesses have been asked to post signs supporting workers' rights.
A letter campaign by members of the Wisconsin State Employees Union, AFSCME Council 24, has gone to an undetermined number of businesses in southeast Wisconsin, warning that they will face a boycott if they don't support collective bargaining for public employee unions.
Wanggaard contacted Attorney General JB Van Hollen, US. Attorney James Santelle and Racine County District Attorney Michael Nieskes to look into the campaign.
"When our economy is already hurting, targeting neutral businesses is unconscionable," Wanggaard said in a news release. "This effort by union bosses seeks to further divide Wisconsin, and aims to economically harm our state rather than bring it together."
Unconfirmed reports have union officials distancing themselves from the campaign in southeast Wisconsin. However, Marty Beil, executive director of the Wisconsin State Employees Union, and Phil Neuenfeldt, the head of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, have not responded to requests for comment.
