Why Not

I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. I believe in sharing my talents and experiences by giving back to the community by giving my time to coaching, church and especially to the disability community. I truly believe that all men and women are created equally.

Infrastructure

Why does this country wait until a tragic event occurs before they realize the importance of the infrastructure in this country?  Whether it be the bridge collapse in Minnesota a couple of years ago, the closing of the zoo interchange a couple of month's ago, cement falling from the County Courthouse, Hoan Bridge or parking structures in recent month's to the latest story of sidewalks in Cudahy.  To me, all Government thinks that by putting off needed maintenance on this country's infrastructure, they are keeping costs in check.  But what is the cost of delaying these updates?

By no means am I an expert on engineering, so I do not know what the useful life these types of things are.  But I do have enough common sense to know that they are not going to last forever.  I do realize that they need to be properly maintained to maybe extend their life an extra year or two, not indefinately.

Speaking from experience on the sidewalk issue, the walk from our sidewalk to the street has been crumbling for a number of years now. We called the city maybe 5 or 6 years ago and we were told that we were scheduled for repairs the following year. In talking with my wife, she remembers because her dad was still around when we called, he has been gone for 4 years now.  We are scheduled for the same repairs again this year for the same problem.  We could have fixed the problem ourselves, but once we figured our cost with the permits, fees, labor, cement etc, we figured it would have been a wash, so we waited on the city to do the job.

I am not looking to point fingers at any one individual for any of this.  Like you, I do not want to see my taxes continue to go up, but there are some things that I am OK with tax dollars being spent on.  Police, Fire, Schools and Infrastructure are some of the good uses of my tax dollars.

We all have regular maintenance that we perform on our selves, homes and cars, why can't Government keep the same schedules?
